Spending time in the sun this summer is an absolute must! Whether you spend your days poolside or packing a bag to head to the beach, taking care of yourself and dressing up your look with a pretty hairstyle will leave you feeling cool and confident all summer long. Check out my top 10 favorite summer styles below, and don’t forget to let me know which one you’re rocking this year!
1. Boxer Braids
Looking for a relaxed style that will keep the hair out of your face? Boxer Braids are for you, babe! This effortless look is created by making two French braids split by the middle part. First you’ll start at the hairline, work your way down to the back of the head, and finally finish up the strands at the end. Secure with a hair tie or use one of my personal favorite methods, the elastic hair ties! These will help hide any bulky hair ties and still keep your hair secure and summer ready.
2. Straight and Sleek
Unless your hair is naturally frizz-free (lucky you!), creating a sleek summer look can turn out to be one hot mess! Start by straightening your hair halfway down your head, and then work your way up to the roots. To tame those crazy fly aways, grab some of my favorite hair gel and you will be set to rock your smooth and sleek look all summer long.
3. Crown Braid
Hot and humid summer days call for easy and effortless updos! This one may sound complicated, but all it takes is a few bobby pins and a little bit of hairspray! Start by splitting your hair into two parts. Braid each part from the middle of the head down to the tip and secure with an elastic. Once both sides are braided, you’re going to take them and cross them over the top of your head, right where a crown would sit! Secure the tail ends of the braids with your bobby pins and voila! Your crown braid is complete! Want to mess it up a little bit? Take a tail comb and pull out some smaller pieces to frame your face.
4. Slicked Back
Want to stay sleek and edgy? Try slicking your hair back with your favorite brush and apply some pomade to finish the job! Your straight strands will be thanking you later for keeping them tamed and slain this summer
5. Half up Half Down Space Buns
You babes already know this is one of my favorite looks! Whether you’re rocking long locks or short hair don’t care, this style is perfect for a fun summer look! Think festivals, concerts, drive-in movies, and more! Start by parting your hair down the middle. Then, grab a small section off the top of one of your sides and twist it up into a little bun. Be sure to secure with one of your elastic hair ties , and mess it up by pulling a few small strands out. Repeat on the opposite side and adjust buns as needed. Finish your look off by securing your buns with some bobby pins and of course, some of your favorite hairspray!
6. Messy Ponytail
Sporty summer babes, this one is for you! We all know the summer heat can be a killer for our favorite hairstyles, but this one will keep you confident and cool while you hit the gym, AND the pool! You’ll start by adding some beach waves into your hair while it is down, emphasizing texture by teasing the top layers a bit with your tail comb. Once you hair is ready to rock with its waves, pull all of your hair back to the upper half of the back of your head and secure with a damage free hair elastic. You’ll finish off this look by using your tail comb to tease any additional pieces for more volume, but be sure to be gentle! If you want some of those face framing pieces, use the end of your tail comb to sweep out some strands.
7. Bubble Braids
Bubble braids are another favorite style of mine! If you all remember, I did a tutorial with Melissa for these braids a few weeks back! To achieve this look, begin by parting your hair down the middle in two sections. Clip back the hair on whichever side you are not working with in order to keep it out of your face. Next, take a small section of hair from the top of your part, and create a mini ponytail secured with an elastic hair tie. Pick up the hair underneath your mini ponytail and secure it to the first ponytail you completed with an additional elastic hair tie. Continue to work your way down the back of the head until you have reached the end of your hair and begin . Finish off this look with your favorite hairspray for extra security!
8. Fishtail Pony
You all know I love nothing more than a fishtail braid, especially when it involves my clip-in extensions! Start by dividing whatever part of your hair you want to fishtail into two sections. The key here is to take a small section of hair from one side and cross it over to the opposite side. I like to pull from the backside of a section of hair, cross it over the top, and join it with the other side. A little insider tip? Keep your small sections roughly the same size as you go so that your braid is symmetrical! Of course, as you get down toward the bottom of your hair, the braid will get thinner and your sections will get smaller and smaller. Secure your braid with an elastic hair tie, and you’re all done! Want some added volume? Pull your small pieces slightly apart to emphasize the detail of the braid and finish with hairspray.
9. Beach Waves + Silk Scarves
Beach waves and silk scarves were made for you, babe! If you’re having a no wash day like me, adding some texture to your hair with some beach waves and finishing it off with a scarf can take you from dirty hair to summer baddie in a matter of seconds! This look will work with any scarf you have lying around the house, just be sure to fold it into a triangle shape, wrapping the flat line against your forehead, and securing the excess fabric in the back with a hair tie or ribbon. You can then cover the tie in the back by wrapping any excess fabric around it and securing your hold with a bobby pin. Check out my favorite silk scarf here!
10. Party Pony
Last but certainly not least is the party pony (famous for always being ready for a good time!) This superior and chic look always has heads turning. Begin by brushing your hair back into place, aiming for the highest point on your head. You’ll want to make sure those baby hairs underneath are brushed and secured too! Once all of your hair is in place, secure the pony with a damage free hair elastic. For extra security, don’t be afraid to grab some of your bobby pins and anchor that hair elastic down nice and tight. For the finishing touches, grab your gel, additional bobby pins, and of course, some hairspray! PRO TIP: Take an extra piece of hair from your ponytail and wrap it around the base to hide your hair elastic, and finally secure the tail ends with a bobby pin. Spray down any flyaways and for extra hold, grab your gel and apply lightly to the tip ends!
