Tips to Prolong Your Hair in Between Washes

Tips to Prolong Your Hair in Between Washes

Dear Diary,

With more sunshine and days spent in the water coming our way in the summer months ahead, it’s important to know how to care for our hair! One of the best ways to do this is to space out your hair washes and let your natural oils work their magic!  If you’re someone who shampoos everyday, then this might seem intimidating, but spacing out your washes has truly shown to help improve hair health in the long run.

Here are eight steps on how to say goodbye to dry and damaged, and hello to healthy and happy...

Pick the Right Shampoo

Believe it or not, over-stripping or overloading your hair with shampoo will only make it more greasy over time, so the secret is to choose one that will gently cleanse your hair without throwing it off balance. Our insider tip? Always avoid sulphates or clarifying shampoos, as they will strip the oil from your scalp and make it produce even more oil over time.

The same goes for heavy, oil-based shampoos that create a lot of product buildup and weigh down your hair. Instead, you’ll want to grab a repairing shampoo which will gently cleanse your locks and leave them feeling fresh and weightless.

Don’t Condition Your Roots

I know, I know - conditioning your roots really does feel good when it comes to brushing your hair out after a hot shower, but it can lead to increased damage over time. When it comes to using conditioner, it’s important to use the least amount of product on your scalp as possible to avoid weighing down your hair if you want it to last longer between washes. If you really want to help the health of your hair, keep the conditioner on the mid lengths and ends of your hair, avoiding your roots at all costs. I promise, you’ll thank me later for this!

Spend More Time on Your Blowout

Trust me, I get it - we’ve all been there and taken the lazy way out when it comes to styling our hair, but the more time we spend on the blowout right after washing, the less time we have to spend restyling! Restyling your hair time and time again will also make it greasy much quicker, so getting your look down on day one will make all the difference when you reach days two and three on your no-wash journey.

Right after washing, a classic bouncy blowout will set your hair in place and give it some extra volume which is perfect for disguising oily roots. My recommendation? Use a blow dry balm or a heat protectant with some hold to prep your hair so that it has the best chance of lasting. If a blow dry is too complicated and out of the question for you, then you can curl or straighten your hair on the first day, slightly maintaining the style until you wash again.

Prep Your Hair For Bed

Here’s the hair tea, sis - there’s no point in spending hours on a blow dry or styling your hair if you’re just going to ruin it in your sleep. So what’s the solution? Tie your hair in a low pony or bun using a silk scrunchie or an invisibobble - these bad body won’t leave kinks or twists in your long locks!

Looking for an alternative? Twist your hair up into a high bun for loads of volume in the morning, or a very loose braid to preserve your curls. If you want some bonus points, switch to a silk pillowcase to help reduce the production of oil from your scalp.

Don’t Touch It

I know we’re all guilty of playing with our hair too much, but did you know that it is actually the biggest cause of greasy hair? Touching your hair transfers the oils from your fingers onto your hair so it’ll get greasy a lot faster if you keep playing with it. Remember - prolonging in between washes is the goal here, so keep your pretty little hands off of your pretty hair!

Dry Shampoo in the Evening

If you’re looking to go longer between washes, then you’re definitely going to need some dry shampoo! Rather than applying it in the morning, the secret is to apply it the night before prior to going to sleep so that it has plenty of time to sink in and work its magic.

If you’re a busy mom like me, I also like to apply dry shampoo and a little bit of heat in between my gym sessions to keep my hair looking AND smelling fresh.

Brush It

Let’s talk brushes! Brushing helps to distribute the oils from your scalp down the lengths of your hair to keep your roots looking fresh. You don’t want to overdo this of course, but running a brush through your pretty hair once or twice a day in the morning or evening is perfect.

My personal favorite is a boar bristle brush! These brushes come HIGHLY recommended from our iconic experts, as they really help to shift the oils from your scalp down to your tips, plus they are incredibly gentle on your locks!

Nail the Third Day Hairstyles

The good news is there are some adorable and trendy hairstyles that work better with third day hair! This will help to disguise your roots and work with the texture. Sleek hairstyles like a low bun or a glossy pony are perfect to try for that third day style because they work with the natural shine of your hair, and don’t require a lot of volume.

That’s it for now, y’all! We hope these tips help to keep you in the sunshine, and your hair happy!
