With so many different lengths and textures of hair, it’s important that all of my girls out there know how to use their clip-ins properly, even with short hair! Truth be told, I’ve had long hair for most of my life, so when I cut it all off and wanted to have options using clip-in extensions, it was important to learn the ins and outs of properly blending them with my natural hair. Because honestly? No one loves to see a bad blend! The point of clip-in extensions is to give your hair natural length and volume.
Lucky for you, I’ve broken down my top six secrets that will help you achieve a better blend when it comes to your short hair because despite what the haters say, you can rock short hair don’t care, and long hair too!
Use a Full Set
I know what you’re thinking - “but if I have short hair, do I really need a full set?!” Take it from me, a full set will pay off in the long run! Having a full set not only adds volume and length to your hair, but it also creates more density for your short hair to blend into the extensions when it comes to styling. Remember - you want your clip-in extensions to look as natural as possible, so the more hair you have to mix in with your natural hair, the better!
Pin Up the Lower Portion of Your Hair
Now, I know you think this next part might sound crazy, but hear me out. If you twist up the lowest portion of your natural hair and pin it away into it’s own mini bun underneath the top layer of hair, you’ll be able to add in the first row of clips without having to worry about that harsh line from your natural hair. Plus, pinning away the lower portion of your hair helps to ensure that the short hair is less dense, making the extensions look more natural natural. Give it a try, and tell me what you think!
Clip In Top Layer Three Inches Down
As you work your way up your head installing the extensions, be sure to clip in the top layer of extensions at least three inches down from your crown. This will not only give you enough of your natural hair to tease up and cover the clip base, but it will also look like a more natural length sitting on top of the extensions, rather than leaving a shorter section of hair on top that doesn’t quite match up with your new locks. Teasing and texturizing spray is your best friend here!
Cut Layers in Your Natural Hair
I love a blunt cut just as much as the next girl, but when it comes to being able to wear extensions, cutting layers into your natural hair is pretty much a must. You can get away with it if you’re only adding extensions for volume and keeping a short length, but when you want to add volume AND length, layers are the way to go! Blending will become so much easier, and it’s a great way to give your natural hair some life.
Style the Extensions With a Hot Tool
Whether you want to rock your new long locks sleek and straight or give them the perfect wave, styling your extensions with your natural hair will help to blend them even more! I always highly recommend waiting to style the extensions until you have installed them into your natural hair so that each hair is going in the same direction. Think about it - if you curled your natural hair in one direction, but then your extensions in another, blending them together is going to be practically impossible! Marrying the hair together after installation makes all the difference!
Ensure Your Color Matches
Last, but certainly not least - find your perfect color match. If you’re on the fence or torn between two colors, I highly recommend testing our color-matching clips to be sure you are ordering the right set! Having the perfect match is crucial to have the ends of your natural hair blend in with your extensions, especially on that top layer! If you’ve tried out our color-matching clips but still aren’t sure what would be best for you and your pretty head of hair, you can send our iconic experts an email at firstname.lastname@example.org with a photo of your natural hair! It’s time for you to feel as iconic as you look.
