A Hair-Lover’s Guide to Summer Travel

A Hair-Lover’s Guide to Summer Travel

Dear Diary,

If you’re planning to be on the go this summer, there are a few essentials you’ll need to make sure you’re protecting your extensions!

Whether you’re braving the plane or road-tripping for the win, travel is no reason to have bad hair! Get picture perfect hair this summer by giving your hair the TLC it deserves while you’re on the go!

1. Prep Your Hair Before You Go

One of the best ways to ensure you’re protecting both your extensions and your natural hair is to prep it before you go. When it comes to my natural hair, I love giving myself a good wash with my favorite mask and blow-dry before hitting the road. If you’re not wanting to use heat on your hair, I highly recommend putting your hair into a protective style like a loose bun or braids! My favorite way to travel with my clip-in extensions is to store them on one of my hair hangers. This not only keeps your extensions tangle free, but will preserve any curl or texture in them! Then as soon as I get to where we’re staying, I can take them out, hang them up, and have them ready to install!

2. Learn to Give Yourself Long-Lasting Styles

When Learning how to do a cute style that can help your hair transition from day-to-night without adding in another wash is crucial to summer travel. My packing recommendations? Bring along small elastics, butterfly clips, and bobby pins to pull off bubble braids, claw clip twists, and of course, boho fishtail braids. Not only will these styles protect your hair from the sun, sea, and salt, but they are also totally instagram-worthy, and give you the perfect beach waves for any occasion!

3. Moisturize Your Mermaid Hair

After spending a few days in the sun and near the beach, your hair is going to be dying to have some moisture, so make sure to pack your favorite deep conditioner, leave-in conditioner, or a hair mask! When we dip our hair in ocean water, the salt causes the cuticle of your hair to swell, causing breakage and damage if not properly addressed. To avoid this, I recommend trying out a barrier product before you even enter the water, such as a hair mask or a deep conditioner! But most importantly, always remember to rinse out that salt water ASAP, even if it is just with a bottle of water! Getting the salt out of your hair is crucial to preventing damage.

4. Sunscreen

Last but certainly not least, pack your sunscreen! But, not just any old sunscreen. You’ve heard it before and I’ll say it again - buying the right kind of sunscreen is crucial to protecting your investment in the long run. Whenever you do your pre-trip shopping, make sure to pick up avobenzone-free sunscreen. Avobenzone is a chemical in most sunscreens that can cause your pretty hair to turn a peachy-orange color, and is practically impossible to get out.
